Well, I did it!
My official time was 2 hours and 1 minute. Much faster than I had anticipated and I am so happy! 504th out of 1147 participants.
We couldn’t have asked for more perfect weather. The sun was shining and it was a beautiful morning. The temperature was around 65 degrees at the start and probably around 70 when we finished.
My two supporters for the day! My friend Kelly and my sister Mikaela! I was so glad to have them there 🙂
Robbie was so sad he couldn’t come watch (he had Guard drill) but he wished me luck before I left in the morning!
Contrary to the way he looks, he was excited for me haha! It was 5:45 in the morning though, so I forgive him.
The start was great, it felt good to just get going. I was feeling great and saw Kelly and my sister at about mile 2.5….
I was happy to see them so early!
I honestly didn’t see hardly any mile markers, which was probably a good thing. I saw the sign for mile 3 and thought, Wow! This is going fast…it felt like we just started!
There were a lot more hills than I had thought there would be but they were mostly at the beginning so it was nice to get them out of the way.
At probably mile 4, I asked a lady who I had been near the entire time, what our pace was (she had a Garmin) and she said 9:25. Holy cow! I usually run around a 9:45-9:50 pace, so this was a lot faster than I was used to, although it didn’t really feel like that.
I took 3 shot blocks at about mile 6 and had some water. It felt like the miles were just flying by.
The atmosphere and all the encouragement seriously made me forget I was even running. I was constantly looking around and just taking it all in. I seriously think I had a smile on my face the entire time. Every time we would pass a water station I would just have the biggest grin on my face, the volunteers probably thought I was nuts!
Around mile 8 or 9 a marathoner passed me and he uh, went to the bathroom while running (if you know what I mean). I had heard about this but never did I think I would actually witness it myself. Wow. It was disgusting and that is all I am going to say about that.
Once I hit mile 10 I just kept thinking in my head, every step you take from now on is further than you have ever ran. That’s a pretty cool feeling.
I honestly never felt tired or like I wanted to stop. I was just so excited and happy to be doing it!
I took 3 more shot blocks around mile 11 and was surprised to see my sister and Kelly again! I didn’t think I would see them again until the finish so that really pushed me the last couple miles.
About mile 12, I knew I had kept a really good pace and had maybe even sped up so I was trying to figure out what my time might be. I kept thinking how awesome it would be to finish around 2 hours but knew that would mean I had been running way faster than I had ever run before.
As we rounded the corner and I could see the finish line I ran as fast as my legs could go. I saw 2:01 on the clock and was so shocked. Of course then I was disappointed that I didn’t get in under 2 hours haha!
I am very happy with how it went. It was such a cool experience and I can’t wait to do another one! Next time, I WILL get in under 2 hours.
